Twig Tycoon

Wadsley Common near Sheffield is a rare lowland heath, which has been eroded over the years by the encroachment of silver birch trees, seen as weeds by many locals. Some trees are being felled to help the heathland return, and this Wadsley man has built up a global business by making novelties like rustic pencils, pens, letter openers, and toys (including "pet logs") out of waste twigs and sticks, which are sold all over the world. He admits it's hard to imagine that a child in Japan could now be playing with a pet log that was once a twig on his local common.
